Davy Fitz has reignited Wexford spark

-

WEXFORD’S achievement in taking the scalps of Limerick and then Galway last weekend to all but clinch promotion from Division 1B just shows you how important effort and determination still play in sport. Players can train all they like and have all the skill but sometimes you cannot beat that will to win.

Huge credit to Davy Fitzgerald (below) for helping to instil that so quickly. You could see it in the players’ reaction just how much it meant. There is something about the Wexford supporter that is so likeable. From belting out Dancing at the Crossroads in 2014 after beating Clare in Wexford Park, things haven’t happened for them since being hammered by Limerick in the quarter-final not long after.

Davy has lit the spark again. Would they have won last year from trailing by seven in Pearse Stadium? Hard to see it.

The other side of the coin is what to think about Galway. Over the last five years, they have been close to the eventual All-Ireland champions every year.

And yet that doubt remains. It’s a mental thing. They are not going to win anything until they learn to step up in tight games.
