It’s a big-budget epic – For a Few Dollars More...

-

SPEAKING of fundraisers, perhaps the GAA should follow the trail blazed by Mullingar’s St Loman’s club who hosted an Oscars evening last night.

It basically amounted to seven short films, low in budget but high in fun, which included an acting bow from Westmeath star, John Heslin who took on the role of mafia boss Michael Corleone from The Godfather movie trilogy.

It is set us thinking and we reckon it is just ready-made for the GAA. Here are a few classic remakes that would suit perfectly. Field of Dreams –A Frank Murphy production which recounts the tale of a man who constructs a stadium only to find that there is no team to play on it, just ghosts from the past. Twelve Angry Men – An X-rated remake which recalls the day in 1983 when Dublin kicked everything that moved, including on occasions the ball, to become champions. The Italian Job – The tale of a brazen heist carried out in broad daylight, under the noses of the cops. Joe Sheridan excels in the baddie lead. The Godfather – An epic tale of a ruthless dynasty, where the head of the family ruled through fear and a silent whistle for the bones of two decades. No plans for a sequel as the main lead is still going strong. The Alamo – The most famous film in a genre that was particularly popular in the north of the country. This is considered to be the all-time classic, a 70-minute siege which felt like it lasted for 13 days in 2011 and starred 14 Donegal men behind the ball. For a Few Dollars More – This remake of the spaghetti western which starred Clint Eastwood (above) is a tale of endless dinners, small talk and big cheques. Oh that’s right, you have just read the review.
