They claimed one reason was that there was no tangible reward for provincial winners who, under Duffy’s blueprint, would be lumbered with three extra games.

But they ignored the fact that only the provincial winners were guaranteed a place in the Super 8s, so there would still be plenty to play for.

It means that the beaten provincial finalists have to win a sudden-death game in the qualifiers to reach the last eight.

We trust that they will not be as numericall­y challenged when they hit Boston in April.
