Geraldine O’Callaghan in Iceland
Here are my top tips for not breaking the bank in Iceland: 1 Alcohol is very expensive in Iceland, so bring your own booze. Buy it at the airport and have a drink before you head out for the night. 2 Stay at an Airbnb. It’s cheaper and you can cook for yourself. Considering that the Icelandic people are so friendly it wouldn’t be a bad thing to share a house with a local.
3 Do invest in waterproof snow boots and a proper waterproof outdoor coat – especially if you are going during winter months. Seriously, your trip can be ruined if you spend your time cold, wet and miserable.
4 Iceland is very punctual, so get to all your tours, buses, bookings and appointments on time as they leave on the dot.
5 When visiting the Blue Lagoon don’t buy the most expensive band. Instead, go for the next one down (or lower if you’re on a budget). The most expensive only entitles you to a second face mask – which you can buy for €3 once you are there.
6 We flew direct to Reykjavik with Wow air and our flights cost €190. It’s important to know that the average cabin-size bag that is usually free with other airlines is not free with Wow air.
So make sure to pay for this when booking online – it costs around €15.
If, like me, you don’t realise, you’ll be stung for €40 at the airport. There is no charge, however, for a handbag.
