‘This is only the tip of the iceberg’
THOMAS Garavan spent 25 years looking for his mother’s siblings.
The seven children were placed in the Tuam home by a child officer in the 1930s – some were fostered. He told the Irish Mail on Sunday: ‘Is the real truth really out there yet? I’m not too sure but this is only the tip of the iceberg.
‘We have a lot left to find out; we don’t know how many bodies are buried there. We need answers as to who the remains belong to and the only way to find this out is through DNA analysis. I want to find out if my aunt is buried there.’
‘They should make every effort now to identify the remains… the State has a responsibility… to get the answers… and the whole truth this time.’
He added: ‘I don’t see why they [the Church] can’t now just come out and say “We’re sorry”.’ He also branded Terry Prone’s comments ‘the height of insensitivity’ and ‘blatantly untrue’.
