Fine the cyclists

-

I just read an article about a crazy proposal involving cyclists. Apparently Ciaran Cannon of Fine Gael is proposing that motorists be fined if they do not maintain a distance of 1.5m when passing cyclists.

A tad unfair, don’t you think, considering that we often see same road hogs (sorry, users) cycle two and even three abreast on our roads?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to fine any cyclist not cycling in single file or if he’s more than half a metre from the verge? That’s safe for him, he doesn’t hold up the traffic as much and is better for the motorist, as it’s easier get an opportunity to safely pass the cyclist. It’s also plain good manners for the cyclist, to keep in anyway. Marie Bannon, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan.
