Taoiseach is already done for – analyst
THE political ground has gone from under Taoiseach Enda Kenny despite his desire to stay on to solve the current crisis in the North, according to a leading political analyst.
Mr Kenny, said in the US on Friday that he cannot leave his post just yet. Before this, observers had predicted he would announce the date of his departure as head of Fine Gael at the party’s parliamentary meeting this week.
On RTÉ Radio, one Fine Gael TD defended Mr Kenny’s comments. Colm Brophy said: ‘We will let him do exactly what he said, which is to come back and tell the parliamentary party on Wednesday.’
However, analyst Noel Whelan dismissed this. ‘The political ground has fallen away from Enda Kenny. Firstly in the election when Fine Gael lost a large number of seats... and secondly in the events arising from his conflict around meetings with Katherine Zappone and contradictory accounts of meetings. Let’s just get it over and done with.’
