Broderick brace sinks the Decies

- By Kieran Murphy

A GOAL early in each half paved the way for a home victory in this Division 4 game. Carlow got a great boost when Paul Broderick struck for his first threepointer two minutes after the throw-in. The visitors responded but a series of wides undid their good work.

Two points from Donie Breathnach and a brace of frees from Paul Whyte kept the Decies in touch but Carlow led 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval. The home side could have had another goal but Waterford keeper, Stephen Enright, advanced to cut off the angle and save point blank from Gary Kelly.

Almost from the restart, in almost a carbon copy move of the first goal the home side struck for another threepointer. Brendan Murphy claimed the kick-out, laid off the perfect ball to Seán Gannon. With Broderick running off the ball the pass was perfect and once more the umpire waved the green flag.

That goal knocked the stuffing out of Waterford who made a series of mistakes.

Long before the end they had shown the white flag and Carlow could afford the luxury of losing key midfielder, Brendan Murphy, to a black card. The big man could feel somewhat aggrieved as he had been the victim of some pulling and dragging as he tried to get forward to help out the everincreasing number of attacks out of defence.

Carlow will rue losing to London in round 2 which derailed their League prospects.
