The Irish Mail on Sunday

Shifty vowels

-

Last Sunday’s Letter of Week reminds me of the elimination of the sound of the letter ‘o’, especially when combined with ‘u’. Thus, ‘out and about’ becomes ‘ite and ibite’; around becomes ‘arind’; house, ‘hise’; roundabout, ‘rindabite’, etc. Sounds (sinds?) to me like a watering down of the natural Irish accent.
