Shifty vowels
Last Sunday’s Letter of Week reminds me of the elimination of the sound of the letter ‘o’, especially when combined with ‘u’. Thus, ‘out and about’ becomes ‘ite and ibite’; around becomes ‘arind’; house, ‘hise’; roundabout, ‘rindabite’, etc. Sounds (sinds?) to me like a watering down of the natural Irish accent.
