Bake Off host doesn’t know how to cook

- By Katie Hind

WITH his reputation for taking drugs and womanising, louche comic Noel Fielding is seen as a curious choice to present the next series of the quaintly traditional Great British Bake Off.

And it seems he’ll be no help to the contestants, because his own repertoire in the kitchen is limited to boiling some pasta.

Ted Gaitskell, whose daughter Delia was Fielding’s girlfriend for 10 years, says: ‘He hardly ever cooked for my daughter. All he would ever do was pasta with some sauce. I am surprised he has got this job. He was never, ever into cooking, not in the slightest.’

Bake Off fans were shocked when earlier this month it was announced that Fielding and Sandi Toksvig, a comedian, writer and broadcaster, would replace Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins as presenters of the series when it moves to Channel 4.

Although Toksvig has often discussed her love of food, the same cannot be said for Fielding. He once said: ‘I don’t like food.’ Between 2006 and 2008, Fielding indulged in what he describes as a ‘hedonistic’ lifestyle, and admitted to taking illegal drugs. He also enjoyed alcohol-fuelled nights with Amy Winehouse.
