Now, even you can’t just have your cake and eat it, Mary

-

FOR someone who has frequently confessed to ignoring her children while building her culinary empire, Mary Berry’s crowing about the joys of motherhood raised more than a few eyebrows. The queen of cakes, pictured, claimed she had the edge on arch rival Delia Smith, claiming Delia was hampered in her career by her childless state. ‘I always feel that Delia, who I think is absolutely brilliant, hasn’t had the advantage of having children like I have because you don’t half get the truth,’ simpers Mary.

‘Because I’ve got children I’m very lucky, because they say: “Don’t do that again mum.”’

Berry’s put-down echoes Andrea Leadsom’s attempt to make political capital out of being a mother during her failed bid for the Tory party leadership, saying that she had more of a stake in the future than Theresa May. Both women believe that motherhood makes them superior, even when the crass insensitivity and cruelty of their remarks shows the very opposite.

They forget that there are so many different ways to be a mother.

In that vein, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, mothers-to-be and mothers-at-heart.
