Byrne on money as Bohs’ run continues

-

DAN BYRNE’s 75th-minute headed goal was the difference between the teams as Bohemians extended their unbeaten run to four games at the expense of Drogheda United.

In a dour first half, Paddy Kavanagh had a long-range effort saved by Drogheda keeper Stephen McGuinness and a similar effort for the home side by Gareth McCaffrey was held low down by Bohs’ number one Shane Supple.

Former Ireland international Stephen Elliott was also denied by the Gypsies’ stopper and the away side made the breakthrough in the 75th minute when Kaleem Simon won a free kick out on the left.

Lorcan Fitzgerald’s left-footed delivery was met by Dan Byrne whose header nestled in the Drogheda net.

At the Carlisle Grounds, Bray Wanderers slipped up against Limerick after falling behind in the fifth minute.

Paul O’Conor gave Martin Russell’s side the lead with a thunderbolt strike from distance and the visitors were able to hold out for their first win since the opening day of the season having lost back-to-back games to Dundalk and Bohemians before steadying the ship, somewhat at least, with a draw at home to Finn Harps.

It wasn’t all plain sailing by the seaside, but this result most certainly gets Limerick out of choppy waters.

Up in Donegal, meanwhile, Finn Harps snatched a dramatic 2-1 win over Sligo Rovers in the north-west derby.

Ciaran O’Connor saw his 94thminute penalty saved by Micheal Schlingermann but the on-loan Dundalk striker kept his cool to convert the rebound.

Veteran Raf Cretaro had given the Bit O’Red the lead before Killian Cantwell equalised. The late drama produced a winner.
