Drico knows who’s the boss

-

BRIAN O’DRISCOLL’S words on the only way Ireland can ever emulate the All Blacks touched a nerve. He said it will never happen, ‘unless we decide to give up other sports, particularly Gaelic football, and pool all those resources into rugby.’ Coming in a week when he appeared in Croke Park with a hurley in hand as part of a film showcasing Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup bid, he has a good understanding of the battle for hearts and minds. And how, for all the profile garnered by rugby in its golden era, the pull of GAA means it remains a minority sport. SOME old GAA traditions seem to stand steadfast. We were reminded of this in Austin Stack Park last week when perusing the match programme. Talented Kerry youngster Jack Savage was profiled, and even though the movie is actually a year older than the Kerins O’Rahillys’ attacker, he said that ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ was his favourite film. Savage clearly knows what it takes to become a county footballer.
