Fitz to lead?

-

In relation to the eventual contest to find the new Fine Gael leader, it’s good that self-declared feminist Mary Carr (whose views this writer doesn’t always agree with) has cast a deservedly critical eye over the leadership ambitions of another feminist, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald (MoS, March 26).

Hopefully, the Minister’s party colleagues will do the same when the time comes.

While it’s inevitable that there will be a focus on the Justice Minister’s gender because she would, if chosen, be the first female leader of Fine Gael, what should matter is not this but which of the contenders is best qualified to lead this country and especially to represent its interests in the new circumstances created by Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidency, bearing in mind that the next leader of Fine Gael will also probably be the next taoiseach.
