GRAND NATIONAL CONTENDERS

- By Marcus Townend

DEFINITLY RED

On paper the best handicapped runner in the race after he romped home by 14 lengths in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster.

ONE FOR ARTHUR

Trying to become the first Scottish winner since 1979 after his stamina-packed win at Warwick in January marked him down as a fast improver.

THE LAST SAMURI

Last year’s runner-up and has run a couple of fine races in defeat this season but will find it tough to go one better off a 12lb higher handicap mark.

MORE OF THAT

Top-class hurdler and long been the apple of trainer Jonjo O’Neill’s eye. Not truly delivered over jumps but a decent sixth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

SAPHIR DU RHEU

Finally getting his act together over fences and his Cheltenham Gold Cup fifth was a career best. Could be primed for massive run.

VIEUX LION ROUGE

Seventh last year but looks different proposition this season with wins in the Becher Chase and Haydock Grand National Trial.

THUNDER AND ROSES

Hasn’t won since landing the 2015 Irish National but has run some fair races and should get in with a low weight for last year’s winning trainer Mouse Morris.
