Egan’s DNA

Well done to Philip Quinn for his very interesting article (MoS, April 2) about new Republic of Ireland international John Egan and the link his late father John Sr, the former Kerry Gaelic great, had with our soccer boss Martin O’Neill.

Not many sports fans would know that the brilliant Kingdom forward clashed with O’Neill in an All-Ireland minor semi-final at Croke Park in 1970, when O’Neill was playing with Derry.

It’s a pity Egan Sr was not present for his son’s senior international debut but maybe he had a good view from upstairs and hopefully Irish soccer supporters will get many more opportunities to cheer this fine young man.
