Agnew ‘disappointed’ as Keane dodges red

- By Craig Hope

NORMAL service is resumed. After a midweek 4-2 defeat at Hull in which Middlesbrough finally attacked only to collapse at the back, they reverted to type with another goalless draw.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in the stands at a sunny Riverside, but the outlook was miserable.

To his credit, Southgate stayed until the end.

At least he witnessed the game’s one big talking point when Burnley’s Three Lions defender Michael Keane slipped and tripped Patrick Bamford as he made his way clear on goal five minutes from time.

Referee Martin Atkinson deemed a yellow card sufficient punishment, but that looked a lenient viewpoint.

Boro boss Steve Agnew said he was surprised that Keane was not sent off.

‘I knew Patrick was capable of getting on last man and he’s a threat,’ he said. ‘I was disappointed, he would have had a one-on-one with the keeper.’
