Early burst sets up a shock win for Galway

- By John Fallon

RAGING favourites Kerry were stunned by a rampant Galway side who should have won by much in Ennis yesterday.

Kerry were stunned by an early Galway barrage and never really recovered as the Tribesmen produced scores at crucial stages to set up a final date with Dublin.

Kerry were chasing the game from as early as 20 seconds when Dessie Conneely fired home the game’s opening goal. It helped Galway into a 1-7 to 0-1 lead after just 10 minutes and they would have been out of sight had they not fluffed three good goal chances.

Killian Spillane got Kerry’s first point from play eight minutes from half-time and goalkeeper Shane Ryan went forward to convert a free from 45 metres to leave it 1-9 to 0-4 at the break.

Kerry made a superb start to the second half when Matthew O’Sullivan forced home a goal. However, Galway responded with a point from Peter Cooke and it was the Galway midfielder who again hit back after Matthew Flaherty registered a couple of points for the Kingdom.

Midfielder Barry O’Sullivan picked up a second yellow and Kerry had to play the final 12 minutes with 14 men.

Galway killed the game in fine style with three points in rapid succession before substitute Colin Brady sealed it with a goal. Jordan Kiely then netted a mere consolation for the Munster champions.
