JOHN McGahern’s
wonderful short story Love of the World, about a garda who played for Mayo, is a superb rendering of the fleeting fame of a county footballer and one of the few contributions made by our literary giants to the canon of GAA literature. As part of RTE and Creative Ireland’s Cruinniú na Cásca tomorrow, a programme of free cultural events around the country, a panel will discuss why the GAA has yet to produce a great work of literature. Where is the Great GAA Novel? is on in Dublin Castle at 11am tomorrow and admission is free, but booking is advised on www.cruinniu.rte.ie.
