Drink driving Bill is populist drivel

-

I would hope TDs show some measure of common sense when asked to vote on the Minister for Transport’s proposal to alter the penalty for drink driving offences. I consider this an attempt by Shane Ross to attach his name to a piece of populist legislation that is not based on proper research. I believe the Healy-Raes’ view of the problem of deaths on our roads is closer to the truth: they suggest there is misreporting, and that other possible causes – such as speeding, texting, tiredness, etc – are ignored. Councils also ignore problems such as roads with potholes, signs obstructed by hedges, etc. These issues need to be properly assessed. The quick fix Mr Ross proposes will only serve his own purposes.
