Man who ‘pretended to be a garda’ is arrested

- By Debbie McCann

A MAN who the Irish Mail on Sunday revealed was travelling around the country allegedly impersonating a plain-clothes detective has been arrested.

John ‘Buddy’ O’Brien was arrested by gardaí in Waterford on Friday hiding behind a car.

Gardaí wanted to question him about a robbery of an elderly woman in LemyBrien, Waterford. Her attacker duped her into believing he worked with a security company and was checking the numbers of the cash notes.

‘Buddy’ O’Brien was wanted in counties stretching from Cork to Donegal in connection with over 10 burglaries.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest but he had managed to evade detection.

O’Brien is expected to appear at a special sitting of Waterford District Court today.
