return of the Cavan senior hurlers to competitiv­e action in the Lory Meagher Cup yesterday was a source of pride to GAA president Aogán Ó Fearghail who registered his backing this week. In truth, it would have been slightly awkward in terms of his legacy if his own county were the only ones not able to field, given his much-touted support for the ‘warrior’ game. The farce of the Ulster Seniour Hurling Championsh­ip, though, showed the battle that is still to be fought to grow the game outside its traditiona­l stronghold­s.
