The Irish Mail on Sunday

One of the good guys

-

CHRIS HUGHTON has done himself and Ireland proud by the courageous manner in which he has led Brighton to the Premier League. In yesterday’s Irish Daily Mail Hughton (right) was named in the top 10 Irishmen who have truly made a name for themsevles in the often brutal and bloodthirsty environment that is British football. Hughton was listed at No.7, behind Bob Kyle (No.1), Johnny Carey and Dave O’Leary.

However, when it comes to absolute bravery, few of the others can lay a finger on the former full-back, who was crazily dismissed by Newcastle United, came back to bring Birmingham City to the playoffs, led Norwich to 11th place in the top flight before being sacked the following season, and has now dedicated himself over three years to bringing the best out of Brighton.

Hughton’s success reminds us that the good guys and the quiet guys can win in Britain, and prove themselves just as smart as the noisy Europeans and the flash locals who often receive far too much attention from media and supporters.

Congratulations Chris!
