Scientology ‘as Gaeilge’ offers big bucks
translators could earn thousands of euros transcribing the works of Scientology leader L Ron Hubbard into Irish.
The Church of Scientology has placed a job advertisement on Publicjobs.ie calling on native Irish speakers to translate the vast works of the religion into the Irish language.
The advert states that translators will be paid a fee of 9cent per word for their work, which could see a translator earn up to €10,000 for transcribing one of Hubbard’s novels which has an estimated word count of 100,000.
This is not the first attempt by the Church of Scientology to translate their material into Irish. In 2015 Church founder Hubbard’s drug rehabilitation programme Narconon was believed to be behind an attempt to contact Irish translators via a translation service called ProZ.com, acting under the guise of a charity organisation.
The Church of Scientology has a centre on Dublin’s Abbey Street and recenty opened an office in Merrion Square.
Despite its attempts to claim charitable, tax-free status here, the church has yet to be officially recognised here as a religion, though it is free to promote Scientology beliefs.
Speaking to the Irish Mail on Sunday this week, a source close to the church said: ‘We would welcome any Irish translators to contact us regarding work... the money is good and it might appeal to part-time Irish teachers looking for summer work.’
The religion boasts Hollywood star Tom Cruise as one of its highest-profile devotees.
