Cup glory that saw Jose and Pep hug

-

BARCELONA weren’t the serial trophy winners of today and had gone four seasons without winning a European title when Bobby Robson took the helm. For the Cup-Winners’ Cup final on May 14, 1997, Robson bravely left superstar striker Hristo Stoichkov on the bench and defender Laurent Blanc out of the squad altogether against his countrymen. Ronaldo won the game against holders Paris Saint-Germain with a penalty after 38 minutes. After the final whistle blew, assistant Jose Mourinho ran onto the pitch to hug midfielder Pep Guardiola. It was the sort of unity Robson instilled in every team he worked for. No English manager has won a European trophy since.
