Material goods can’t replace God in Irish society

-

In response to Gerard Corrigan (MoS letters, April 30) about the new multicultural Ireland being a better society, I beg to differ.

Let’s look at godless Ireland in 2017: 600 suicides a year, gardaí hospitalised nearly every weekend, no respect for God or man.

Irish people think they can fill the void where God used to be with material things. Atheist, liberal Ireland is not a pretty sight. Our great patriots of 1916 must be turning in their graves. Pádraig Pearse Doherty, Dublin 24. aside the fact that unionists have no desire to join us, why would we in the South want to enjoin with Northern nationalists who mostly vote for the so-called ‘republican movement’ which was committed to undermining our democracy?

What nation state in the world would want to embrace people who support those who tried to subvert their freedom? We are a long way from achieving compatibility with our neighbours. Pat O’Mahony, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
