Terrible Terrano is bottom of the class for failing the NCT – but which luxury car had the best pass rate?

... And the golden oldies that keep going back to the future

- By Craig Hughes

SOME Irish drivers are going ‘back to the future’ to pass the NCT – the DeLorean, Ford Cortina and Toyota Corolla are among a host of classics keeping motorists rolling back the years. While some modern cars are falling apart, the old reliables keep motoring along, defying the tests of time.

The DeLorean – which brought Marty McFly Back to the Future – is flying through the NCT. All six of the 1981 and 1983 models tested last year were passed.

The 1980s Ford Cortina model boasts a 100% pass rate as does another Ford, the 1986 Sierra.

Ford would do well to look to the old classics for future innovations after all of its 2000 Ford KA 3 models failed last year. Other notable blasts from the past with a 100% pass rate were the 1981 Renault 5, the 1987 Ford Escort Rs Turbo, the 1981 Toyota Starlet, the 1984 Toyota Carina and the 1984 Volkswagen Scirocco.

Also passing the NCT in 2016 were a 1980 Honda Civic, 1981 Opel Kadett and Triumph Tr7, a 1984 Leyland Mini, a 1985 Nissan Micra and a 1986 Golf 1.8 GTI. Among the oldest cars to pass last year was a 1948 Rolls Royce, a 1952 Triumph, a 1957 Bentley and 1968 Jaguar.

However, the 1980 Volkswagen Golf and 1983 Toyota Levin were among those with a 100% failure rate.
