Two FG taoisigh remember a third
FORMER taoiseach Liam Cosgrave and his family were the guests of honour at an official ceremony to rename the refurbished arena at the Army Equitation School in honour of his late father, WT Cosgrave, at McKee Barracks in Dublin yesterday.
Mr Cosgrave, 97, was joined by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Junior Defence Minister Paul Kehoe, and senior army personnel at the new WT Cosgrave Arena in marking the contribution of his father in founding the Army showjumping training school.
WT Cosgrave was President of the Executive Council of the Free State and played a key role in establishing an Army show jumping team in 1926.
The move was considered to be a brave decision at that time in the country’s history.
Since then, the Irish Army team has had many successes on the world stage.
Most recently the team rode to glory against Belgium in the Nations Cup in Norway.
Liam Cosgrave served as taoiseach from 1973 until 1977.
