Wagner’s overtures to Anfield to keep Ward

- By Joe Bernstein

HUDDERSFIELD manager David Wagner will ask his good friend Jurgen Klopp if he can keep Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward for an extra season should they win promotion to the Premier League tomorrow.

Ward, 24, has excelled in Huddersfield’s run to the Championship play-off final against Reading at Wembley and kept 11 clean sheets in 43 matches during his loan spell.

Wagner, chosen by Klopp to be best man at his wedding, wants Ward to continue as his No1 should Huddersfield return to the top flight for the first time since 1972. Klopp has pledged to take Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and Ward on a pre-season tour to choose which two goalkeepers he will use after monitoring them closely.

He said after Huddersfield’s win against Sheffield Wednesday in the semi-final that he admired Ward’s “confidence” in the decisive penalty shoot-out when he made two saves.

Another Huddersfield loanee, Chelsea and England Under-21 midfielder Kasey Palmer, is wanted by Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.
