Mystery over death of worker

- By Nick Harris

MYSTERY still surrounds the death of a construction worker on a Qatar 2022 World Cup stadium building site, more than four months after the fatal incident.

He was killed in January when he fell from a high platform at Doha’s renovated Khalifa Stadium, which staged the local Emir Cup final last week as its reopening event.

The deceased man was 40-yearold Zac Cox, a ‘rope specialist’ working as a freelance subcontractor for German firm Pfeifer, themselves working for Midmac-Six Construct, a QatariBelgian joint venture.

Sources say separate investigations by the construction firms and by the Qatar Supreme Committee organising the 2022 World Cup were completed ‘at least two months ago’. It is believed the two probes came to different conclusions.

Neither Midmac nor Pfeifer have responded to requests for comment. Midmac said in January that Cox was wearing a harness when a lever hoist failed and ‘the harness was cut during the fall with a fatal outcome. What caused the cut is subject to further investigation.’
