Huddersfield will be a great addition to Premier League

-

PREMIER LEAGUE football at last and I could not be happier for Huddersfield Town chairman Dean Hoyle and the club’s supporters.

They will be favourites for relegation but who cares? Relegated Sunderland just received £98 million. Not bad compensation for being one of the worst sides in Premier League history.

Huddersfield is a small club with a great backing and very strong base in the community. It was no surprise to me they offered season tickets for less than £200 to fans who had continued to renew them for more than 10 years.

That’s because Hoyle (left) is a true fan who wants to do what is best for the club.

He deserves a lot of credit for trying to get to the Premier League the right way, without spending millions the club doesn’t have.

He got them out of League One, had the smallest budget in the Championship and he’s just won promotion. It’s an amazing story.

I was part of the squad that missed out on promotion against Peterborough when Lee Clark was manager and I’ve always had a fondness for the club.

The ground will be full and raucous every week.

When I saw them beat Preston North End at the end of the 2015/16 season, I fancied them to do well. With David Wagner in charge for his first full season, I knew they would be serious contenders.

Hopefully he will stay. He knows this is a fantastic opportunity because although the finances will be tighter than other clubs — they set a £10,000-a-week wage cap for the Championship — he has the expertise to find players who are up to the task of keeping Huddersfield in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche has proved, with a similar budget at Burnley, that survival is possible with the right signings and hard work. So I would not write Huddersfield off.
