Fix your English!

-

I recently read a suggestion that people in this country should consider learning a second language, such as French or Spanish. However, some of those thinking of such a venture might first ensure that their English is of an acceptable level.

It can be irritating listening to former sportsmen masquerading as journalists on radio and television using phrases like ‘I done’ and ‘I seen’. There is an epidemic of bad English on the internet. Many obviously do not know the difference between ‘there’ and ‘their’, and I once read of a man being six foot tall in his ‘bear’ feet! I could go on and on but, as Bill O’Herlihy used to say: ‘We’ll leave it at that.’ Noel Coogan, Navan, Co. Meath.
