Heavron strike sinks Déise

- – DARAGH SMALL

DANNY HEAVRON blasted a goal as Derry dumped Waterford out of the qualifiers at Fraher Field.

Waterford had James McGrath blackcarded in the first half and after that it was always an uphill task.

There were just 1,067 in attendance despite the sunshine and Waterford’s fine display against Cork in Munster.

Derry held a 0-11 to 0-9 lead at halftime after they dominated the early stages but Waterford found their feet towards the end of the half.

Heavron scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute when he was put through by Karl McKaigue and finished well past Stephen Enright.

Waterford didn’t get the first point of the second half until Donie Breathnach scored in the 58th minute and they limped out of the Championship.
