Lowry struggles to make headway

- – PHILIP QUINN

HAVING scraped the cut on the mark of one over, Shane Lowry was unable to make inroads in the third round of the US Open at Erin Hills.

The Offaly native survived on the back of a brace of twos on Friday but yesterday was undone on the short holes, running up fours at the ninth and 16th.

The world number 69 finished on a high note when he holed a 10-footer on the par-five 18th for his solitary birdie of the round.

That left him on two over par, just outside the top 50.

The leading quartet, Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Bruce Koepka and Brian Harmon began yesterday tied on seven under.

None of them has won a major before unlike Zach Johnson, the former Masters and British Open champion, who moved into the picture for a run at the leaderboard’s summit today on three under after a fine 68.

There was a dearth of stellar names to be seen on moving day as the world’s top three players, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day were among those to miss the cut.

It was the first time since the world rankings began in 1986 that none of the leading three players were around for the weekend of a major.
