ARE SCORES BEING DEVALUED?
The high scoring nature of the hurling Championship is certainly a feature. Galway hitting 33 points against Offaly has raised the question as to whether things have gone too far.
I was part of the Hurling2020 committee and this issue was discussed at length, the fact that with such a light sliotar, lads can score at ease from 70, 80 yards. It only requires a little flick from out the field now to go over.
Our conversation was framed by the fact that the Kilkenny-Tipperary All-Irelands of 2009, 2010 were among the best of all time.
Look at Cork putting up 2-27 to Tipperary’s 1-26 this summer. Compare that kind of scoring to the 1995 All-Ireland final when Clare beat Offaly 1-13 to 2-8.
Ultimately, we felt that we’d better not tamper with things when the game was going so well. It’s worth keeping an eye on though.
