Mayo’s curse hits the silver screen

- COMPILED BY MARK GALLAGHER AND PHILIP LANIGAN

THERE’S been enough drama involved in Mayo’s quest for AllIreland glory, it’s surely worth the Hollywood treatment . Indeed, one part of the story has already made its way to the big screen, with a short Irish film being based around the most infamous superstition in Irish sport. ‘An Mallacht’ revolves around Mayo’s apparent All-Ireland curse – with the story concerning a doctor, who just happens to be a passionate Mayo supporter, and his discovery that one of his patients is the last surviving member of Mayo’s 1951 team. It picked up Best Film Award at Oddalenia Film Festival in Dublin and will be shown at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 12. AHEAD of next Sunday’s hotly-anticipated Leinster hurling final between Galway and Wexford, legendary Tribesman Tony Keady will be in Croke Park museum next Saturday, giving a legends tour – and no doubt fielding questions as to why his enigmatic county have failed to capture Liam MacCarthy since he graced their great side in the late 1980s. THE GAA museum summer school will focus on sport and politics this year, with a number of interesting talks and a keynote address by Dr Harry Edwards, renowned sociologist and famous for the Black Power protest in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. A threeday ticket is €120 while daily passes are €45. Further information is available at gaa.ie.
