RTÉ, with all these repeats you are really riling us!

Summer and the ignored Ireland

-

RTÉ must mean ‘Repeat Things Endlessly’. Take a look at the schedule – day after day of constant repeats!

One of the more ambitious titles and repackages is The Best Of Today. I shudder to think what got rejected from this time filler!

You can see Operation Transformation again and again and again. Yes, inspirational tales of weight loss are commendable but should we have to pay a licence fee for the pleasure of watching a group of people stop eating carbs and go for a walk?

The greatest laugh of all, however, is Friday night summer primetime. We are treated to the Best Of The Late Late Show. The fine sunny weather is very welcome and will be enjoyed by all while it lasts. Images in the media will always associate the good weather and high temperatures with trips to the beach.

Photographers and journalists always bring their reports from places like Portmarnock, Bray, Tramore, Salthill, Bundoran and other seaside resorts. Lovely images and hopefully it will stay fine for children to enjoy the school holidays.

However, for many rural communities whose livelihoods depend on the weather, this spell of sunshine is welcomed for a different reason. It is the opportunity to make silage, save hay, cut turf etc.

Unfortunately these images are seldom captured on TV news or in the newspapers. Perhaps when we have the next heatwave, some far-seeing cameraman or photographer will think outside the box and visit a hayfield, silage pit or even the bog for a more original picture!
