YouTube history for Ladies’ finals

- COMPILED BY MARK GALLAGHER AND PHILIP LANIGAN

WHILE the nation will be distracted by the goings on at Croke Park, a significant slice of history will be made when the Ulster and Connacht Ladies Football finals take place this afternoon. TG4 has teamed up with the LGFA to live-stream all four provincial finals this year, via YouTube. The Ulster final between champions Monaghan and Donegal will throw in at 3.45pm in Clones while the Connacht final between Galway and holders Mayo, still led by the legendary Cory Staunton, starts at 4.30pm at McHale Park. Both finals will be streamed simultaneously, while the Munster and Leinster deciders will also be streamed live next weekend. IT HAS long been considered that there is a link between hurling and ice hockey. In an effort to further explore this, Ger Loughnane undertook an odyssey across Canada to discover if our national sport and theirs is related. The result sounds like a fascinating documentary, Poc na nGael, which will premiere at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh on Sunday, July 16, and will be broadcast on TG4 later this year. Loughnane unearths a link between the origin of ice hockey and the immigration of Irish Protestants and Ulster Scots, and looks at Irish emigrants in Canadian NHL teams.
