‘Being Wagner’ by Simon Callow (William Collins, €20.99) ‘Had he been anything other than a genius,’ writes Callow of his subject, ‘he would have been locked up.’ How could this angry, self-obsessed, virulent anti-Semite write such sublime music? This is a terrific introduction to a man who described himself as ‘the maddest person imaginable’.
