Woman dies after being hit by Luas

-

A WOMAN has died after being struck by a Luas tram early yesterday morning.

The accident occurred on the Red Line in Rialto, along St James Walk, around 12.30am and involved a city-bound Luas tram.

The scene was temporarily closed overnight to allow a forensic investigation but had reopened by the morning.

In 2012, mother-of-one Ann Marie McQuillan, 32, died after she was struck by a Luas at the Blackhorse Red Line stop in Inchicore. An inquest into Ms McQuillan’s death heard that she was struck as she ran across the tracks to catch a tram arriving on the other side.

The driver, Paul Graham, said that she ‘came out of nowhere’, adding that he hit the emergency brake as soon as he saw her.

Gardaí have asked that anyone who may have seen yesterday’s collision or who may have information to call Kilmainham Garda Station on (01) 666 9700 or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
