Sliotars are simply too light
THE Kilkenny Under-21s were the latest to reach the 30-point mark, re-opening the debate about whether the weight of the sliotar needs to be modified.
It’s affecting the play too much and taking the ball out of play too often — a ball that used to drop around the square is now going wide. I was at a minor match this week where there was little action in the fullforward line for that reason.
When I started off, if a minor scored a 65 he was canonised. Now it’s a matter of course.
It’s not all about having highscoring matches. In our 1995 Leinster final against Kilkenny, the score was six points apiece at half-time —and it was one of the best games of its time in terms of skill and intensity.
Time for a rethink.
