LAPD detective Renee Ballard is Connelly’s first female protagonist, and at first he works rather too hard to persuade us of her authenticity. Soon, though, the novel settles down into a characteristically complex tale of murder and police corruption. Ballard may not yet have the easy familiarity of Connelly’s Harry Bosch but this is a promising debut.
