Religious events are turning into fashion parades
After noting the exhibitions of grandeur outside my local church at the time of weddings, Confirmations and First Communions over the last few weeks, I can’t help wondering if too much emphasis is being placed on style at the expense of the real purpose of the occasions.
It does seem that it is very much a case of keeping up with the Joneses, or probably moving a few step ahead of them, with many of those attending, especially females, doing their best to look better than their neighbours.
While far from a prude myself, I feel that more modesty in dress would be more appropriate for the celebrations. The amount of money being spent on such events is totally over the top and perhaps immoral.
Perhaps a few critical words from the pulpits might help to tone down these fashion exhibitions and allow more focus on the real meaning of the occasions. Liz Lawless, Navan, Co. Meath.
