Davy must end row

-

IN THE pages of this newspaper this morning, our hurling analyst Michael Duignan replies one final time, after finding himself under sustained verbal attack from Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald this last week.

Fitzgerald did not take kindly to Duignan’s views - that were expressed via a tweet - after he watched his team exit the AllIreland Championship at the hands of Waterford last Sunday.

Michael Duignan was merely repeating his opinion, presented on these pages several times this season, that a sweeper system is not helping the likes of Wexford (and Waterford) in their desperate quest to win the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

It is an honest opinion, and one shared by hurling supporters around the country - and, indeed, many of the game’s top managers.

Fitzgerald, however, took umbrage and amongst other things questioned the legitimacy of Duignan’s comments, and went a step further in insisting that Michael Duignan should step into his shoes and try to propel a county team at the All-Ireland title.

Michael Duignan, this morning, explains why he has not done so, and does not intend doing so despite receiving many offers from counties since his retirement as an All-Ireland winning Offaly hurler.

The argument between the two men should now be at a finish.

Davy Fitzgerald needs to simply walk away.
