Healy takes gold at Euro ‘youths’

-

Sarah Healy struck gold for Ireland in Hungary at the European Youth Olympics Festival when she won the 1,500m yesterday.

The Blackrock AC athlete was always prominent and burst away from the pack with 300m to go, winning convincingly in a personal best of 4:19.85.

There was further success as the women’s 4x100m relay team of Niamh Foley, Miriam Daly, Rhasidat Adekele and Patience Jumbo-Gula took bronze, recording a time of 46.28 behind winners Belgium (46.01) and the Netherlands (46.05).

It takes Ireland’s total medal haul for the multi-sports event in Gyor to six. Jumbo-Gala won bronze in the 100m, Adekele took 200m silver, while Jade Williams won bronze in the hammer.

In cycling, Lara Gillespie took a silver medal in the time trial.

England are in a good position to win the third test against South Africa at The Oval, despite rain restricting play. The hosts established a lead of 252 as they reached 74-1 in their second innings after bowling SA out for 175 in their first innings.

Nicolas Roche (right) came 10th in the San Sebastian Classic single day race, which was won by Team Sky’s Polish rider, Michal Kwiatkowski.

Kwiatkowski and Tom Dumoulin bridged to a leading group of three that included teammate Mikel Landa. The Pole was strongest in the sprint for the line, beating Tony Gallopin and last year’s winner Bauke Mollema. Roche finished in a group that was 38 seconds behind the winner.
