Misplaced logic shown up
DID the GAA jump the gun with the introduction of the Super 8 in 2018, a round-robin involving two groups of four at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage? Decreasing attendances was one of the main reason behind the push for change, yet this summer has captured the imagination and fans have responded. The re-emergence of counties such as Roscommon, Kildare and Armagh has been part of the renewed interest. The ‘full house’ signs went up on yesterday’s All-Ireland quarter-final double bill with over 175,000 expected at headquarters over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend. The Football Championship figures are on course for one million. The question for the GAA is whether a bumper summer only undercuts the logic behind a system that is likely to copperfasten the dominant position of the game’s heavy hitters.
