Benjamin Mendy (Man City) Won as many man-of-the-match awards in the Champions League last season as Cristiano Ronaldo and has made more accurate crosses from open play (75) than any defender in Ligue 1 since 2015-16.

Alvaro Morata (Chelsea) Scored 15 goals from 55 shots for Real Madrid last season — the best conversion rate in La Liga. Started just 14 league games in 2016-17 but that was enough for Chelsea to spend £70m on him.

Impressively for a central defender, Lindelof was booked just once for Benfica in 47 appearances last season. The 23-year-old Sweden international (right) became United’s costliest defender at £31m.

Versatile star signed from Schalke and has proved an instant hit with Gunners’ fans. The Bosnia international scored three goals for Schalke last season and set up five, the most assists by a defender in the Bundesliga.

Signed to help fill Romelu Lukaku’s boots after he left for Manchester United and signed for only £5m due to a buy-out clause. The 21-year-old Canary Islander (left) scored 16 in 31 for a struggling Malaga.
