Wire creator: Trump may drive me out of US

- By Ruaidhrí Giblin

THE man behind critically acclaimed TV show The Wire says he could soon be seeking ‘political asylum’ on these shores ‘if things get worse’ in the United States.

David Simon, the writer and producer of the classic HBO series, is an outspoken critic of President Trump. In Ireland for a family holiday this week, Simon told the Irish Mail on Sunday he was delighted with the departure of right-wing commentator Steve Bannon from the Trump White House: ‘The news is that Mr Bannon has been fired, so I’m going home tomorrow on the premise that things can get better. But if I’m wrong and things get worse, there’s a good likelihood that we will arrive at Shannon Airport asking for political asylum. So be ready and be generous.’

The creator of The Wire, which told the story of poor black Americans, said: ‘It’s been a hard week. Charlottesville was awful. Although... the healthy contempt shown for the legacy of the confederacy and its monuments has been encouraging.’
