The Irish Mail on Sunday

A happy ending

-

ON Monday last, I was listening to RTÉ Radio 1.

A wonderful elderly lady named Bridget was on Liveline, and her sad story did not enhance the dreary Monday mood. She told Joe that she had been conned out of a large sum of money by gangsters who promised to install a small back garden shed for her. Bridget’s husband was ill, and while she was distracted for a few moments caring for him, the gangsters made off with her money, and no shed was installed.

She was clearly and understandably upset, but within minutes her world – and our Monday – was transformed into one of positivity and joy.

Kind-hearted listeners queued up to help Bridget, and one man in particular actually donated a brand new shed similar to the one Bridget had hoped to get from the con men.

The joy in Bridget’s voice was a tonic. Not only did this kind act transform her day from dark clouds to sunshine, but it also confirmed to the masses listening that most people are good. It certainly restored my faith in humanity. Seán Keegan, Ferbane, Co. Offaly.
