‘Harmless and helpful’ Simon for the Áras?
SPECULATION is rife within Fine Gael that Simon Coveney could be a shock candidate for the presidency if an election takes place in 2018.
The preference of Leo Varadkar is for a non-contest and he has declared full support for Michael D Higgins – effectively snubbing any presidential ambitions of Enda Kenny.
‘That sent a clear message to Enda that there was no way Leo would support him,’ a minister said.
However, should a contest occur, Fine Gael will need a viable candidate and Mr Coveney is seen as a solid – if surprising – option.
‘We would need to find a contender that won’t embarrass us,’ said a source. ‘The party are terrified of a repeat of the “Gay Mitchell for President” debacle. The last thing Leo needs is a repeat of “Here comes Mr 7%” entering the room with all of the gravitas of a Spanish waiter.’
Ministers are keen to emphasise Mr Coveney’s suitability for the Park.
‘Simon looks very presidential – he has all the qualities for the job. He campaigned very well and won the debates,’ said one. Another said: ‘He has the nice wife, the family. Maybe less of the yacht… but he looks the part – harmless and helpful. You could let him use the best crockery.’
However, one senior minister said: ‘Our Simon is in a very curious place. Paschal has leapfrogged him in the succession and his seat is not safe in Cork. People are asking why he moved from housing – he was going to fight to the end like Cú Chulainn on the rock. Then suddenly he couldn’t get out of the place quick enough. The presidency might be a case of getting out while the going is good.’
